Grandpa's Gold Watch

This is a tribute to my grandfather, but, it is also a story honoring all grandparents of the world. From the North Pole down to the steamy hot jungles of the Amazon forest, since explorers have always rushed to see and feel what it is like to be in touch with the real wild part of our American continent.

1880 Illinois Watch Co. Pocket watch - Solid 14KT GOLD Railroad Watch - Engraved - 01

1880 Illinois Watch Co. Pocket watch - Solid 14KT GOLD Railroad Watch - Engraved - 01

This rare solid 14KT Gold pocket watch was made by the Illinois Watch Co. and has a great history attached to it. This piece is an authentic solid gold railroad Pocket watch dated to the Victorian era. The pocket watch is heavy and large, measuring 2 1/16” in diameter.

After looking up the serial number (320814) I found that this Illinois pocket watch was manufactured in 1880. The watch is contained in a full hunting case. Including the movement and hardware the pocket watch weighs 135 to 136 grams. I believe the movement contains no less than 11 ruby jewels. Engraved in fancy Victorian calligraphy, the initials “JNW” are monogrammed onto the front of the case. The outside of dust cover is hand engraved in beautiful script:

“Presented to
J.N. Woods
by the
Nickerson Yard Force
of the
A.T. & S.F. R.R.
Sept 30 1887”

The Blauer Watch Case Co. manufactured the 14KT Gold hunting case, and a stamp reading “BLAUER” can be found inside the case right above the 14KT gold mark. The white enamel dial has black roman numerals and seconds hand at 6. The watch is currently not functional but a professional jeweler or watchmaker should be able to have it running in no time. The dial has a few hairline cracks, but the crystal is scratch free and is in flawless and original condition.

The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway was one of the larger railroads in the United States. The company was first chartered in February 1859. Although the railway was named in part for the capital of New Mexico, its main line never reached there as the terrain made it too difficult to lay the necessary tracks. The Santa Fe's first tracks reached the Kansas/Colorado state line in 1873, and connected to Pueblo, Colorado in 1876. The original owner of this pocket watch ( J.N.Woods) worked on a railway yard in Pueblo, Co. in the late 1800’s.

Waltham Vanguard - movement

Waltham Vanguard - movement

My great-grandfather's pocket watch. trying to find some more info on it online, all the numbers are visible. Inside says Vanguard, Waltham, Mass. 19 Jewels Adjusted. Still works!

Looked up the SN and it was made in 1892!

update!

Found out some things -

I'm told it is a size 18 hunting movement likely from 1902-03 (a model from 1892, made later). The fact that the crown is set on the 3 shows that it is a hunting movement, which means it originally had a much nicer, maybe even gold, case that would have had a clasping spring lid that hinged by the 9. Something must have happened to the case, but since the movement was still good it was put into this cheap basemetal open face case.

Also found out that it is a lever set movement, which explains why the crown would wind the watch, but wouldn't set it. After taking the face glass off, there was an almost invisible lever in a notch by the 5, which I could just get my thumbnail behind enough to pull out, then the crown would actually move the hands. Railroad grade watches all had to be lever set movements because crown set movements had the possibility of not being pushed back in after being set.
